The Secundus Verse
Begun: 2010
Description: It is a world ruled by Mad Science, but that never affected Victor Van Dort. He lived in the almost oppressively normal town of Burtonsville, leading a simple if privileged life. Son of the nouveau riche cannery owners, Victor expected his world to remain simple, dull, and boring. But when he accidentally came across the steam train in the woods outside town, his entire life got turned upside-down. Now he has to adjust to the Mad Science Capital of the World -- and perhaps discover what fate really has in store for him.
Notes: I've been a fan of steampunk for years now -- ever since I discovered Phil Foglio's excellent webcomic "Girl Genius." The melding of Victorian style and sensibility with modern-day technology really grabbed my imagination. So it's a little surprising that it took me until 2010 to actually come up with a NaNoWriMo featuring it. But when I finally did -- woo boy, this freaking story took over my life. I started planning it out in January of that year, and by November I had a full universe pretty much created. This was also the moment when my focus began to shift away from BTTF-centric stories to Corpse Bride and Alice-centric ones, as rather than let Victor take over the story, as he did in "The Tale," I just made him the protagonist from the beginning. It was a big step, and the start of the journey that would eventually lead to my focus on the mainstay of this site: CB/Alice/BTTF crossovers.
After I did my usual "won NaNo without finishing the story" business, something funny happened. While normally I have trouble keeping interest in a NaNoWriMo tale after I'm done with the contest, I realized that I wanted to spend more time in this universe. Specifically, I wanted to spend more time with the protagonist. So I ended up making him an LJ RP account, just for funsies. And joining a character development/RP community, also just for funsies.
So, if you were wondering how "Secundus" blossomed from an incomplete NaNo into a full-fledged 'verse with stories out the wazoo. . . I now have more short fic that I know what to do with, one fully-planned sequel and a third possible one in the back of my head, and a ton of backstory. So -- it's only fair that I share my pain with you. Come one and all, and let's dive into the world of Secundus.
