Communication Spells
● Whisper & Scream:
○ Color: Teal
○ Glyph: A mouth shape with three radiating straight lines above and three radiating curvy lines below
○ Requires: No reagents, but the caster must always be touching their throat with their hand or wand while they’re using the spell.
○ Effect: Allows the caster to either amplify or soften their voice. The caster can make themselves heard clearly over the loudest storm, or whisper so quietly that only someone standing directly next to them would hear.
○ Visuals: A flash of bright teal appears as the caster touches their throat, then remains in a shimmering haze around the area of the voicebox as they use the spell.
○ Enchantments Or Potions:
- To charge into a wand, simply inscribe the glyph on it and use the tip of the wand to touch the throat while concentrating. This also allows the caster to amplify or soften someone else’s voice.
● Write Across The Miles:
○ Color: Clay brown
○ Glyph: A cylinder with a thinner cylinder inside of it, protruding out the top
○ Requires: A bottle or similarly-shaped clay container of any size. The caster tucks the message into the bottle, concentrates on the recipient, then throws the bottle at the ground. The bottle will shatter as the spell takes (regardless of the actual hardness of the ground), then dissolve away into nothing as the message heads toward its recipient.
○ Effect: Allows the caster to send a written message to anyone he or she knows. The caster must know the recipient’s name to send a message to them, and it’s easier to send a message to a friend than a stranger. Messages can be sent anywhere in the world, although the closer the intended recipient is, the less concentration is needed. Once sent, the message will appear as close to the recipient as possible given the recipient’s circumstances (in their hand, in their mailbox, in their pocket, etc).
○ Visuals: The message dissolves away in a shower of clay-colored specks, and reappears in a similar shower when it reaches the recipient.
○ Enchantments Or Potions: None.
● Mind To Mind:
○ Color: Light hazy pink
○ Glyph: Two brain shapes (an oval with a dent in the bottom edge and two squiggly lines inside) connected by three straight horizontal lines
○ Requires: Something to write the glyph with and something to write it on that can be chewed. The caster inscribes the glyph into the substance, then chews on it for a moment while concentrating on the names and/or faces of those he/she wishes to communicate with. Once the spell takes, the caster will immediately feel the lines of communication open, and the reagent can be swallowed or spat out.
○ Effect: Allows the caster to communicate telepathically with up to three other people. The caster must either know the names or faces (preferably both) of the people he or she wishes to communicate with. The caster can communicate with animals via this method, but it takes more concentration and the caster is not guaranteed to understand the animal’s thoughts. Pets are easier to communicate with than strange/wild animals. Mental communications can be as distracting as physical ones, so the caster is urged to take care while “talking” mind-to-mind while also performing other actions. The effect lasts for six hours or until someone deliberately breaks the connection.
○ Visuals: A faint pink haze appears briefly around the caster’s scalp like a halo, then fades. The caster tends to feel a slight tingling in the scalp whenever communicating telepathically, but there’s no visual sign of mind-to-mind speech.
○ Enchantments Or Potions:
- Mindspeak Potions are made by drawing the glyph on something, chewing it once or twice, then soaking it in liquid. The person concentrates on the intended recipients while drinking the potion. An incorrectly-made potion will give the caster the tendency to say whatever he/she is thinking out loud for six hours.
- To charge into a wand, the caster should wet the glyph inscribed on their wand with a bit of saliva (it evaporates once it takes, but if you want to wash your wand afterward, no one will stop you). The caster touches the wand to their lips or temple to use the spell.
● Reaper’s Speech:
○ Color: Midnight blue
○ Glyph: A scroll-shape with the image of a scythe on it
○ Requires: A piece of a funeral shroud. The message is wrapped up in the cloth, then either torn or cut to pieces as the caster concentrates until the spell takes and the pieces vanish.
○ Effect: Allows the caster to send a written message through the veil to any dead/living person her or she knows (depending on the caster’s own state). The message arrives in the hands of the person the caster wishes to contact, reassembling itself from the destruction necessary for the spell’s completion. The caster must have known the recipient in some capacity in order to communicate with them – letters cannot be sent to strangers, and it’s much easier to send a note to a friend rather than just an acquaintance. The recipient must also be in the correct place on either side of the veil – a message that is sent to someone who has moved on to Heaven (or been forcibly sucked into Hell) or is currently visiting the other side will be returned to sender, reappearing whole in the caster’s hands. Sending messages to the very newly dead randomly fails from time to time – in that case, the caster is advised to wait a couple of hours, then try again. In the case of the living contacting the dead, being near the person’s grave seems to help.
○ Visuals: The message vanishes from the caster’s hands in a flash of midnight blue light, then glows the same color as it assembles itself in the recipient’s hands.
