NaNoWriMos
Every year in November, thousands of people compete in National Novel Writing Month -- an online challenge to write a novel -- defined there as 50,000 words -- within the space of 30 days. No editing, no revising -- just writing. The idea is that everyone has some sort of book in them, and if they could just turn off their internal editor and write, it can come out.
I've been participating in the challenge for five years now: 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. My first novel was an original effort about a girl and her next door neighbor who proves to be a vampire. Although I got to 50,000 words, I never completed the story (in fact, I'd ended up skipping straight to the climax after realizing I was spending way too much time on the beginning chapters). After taking 2006 off due to feeling overwhelmed, I dove back in in 2007 with a fanfiction "novel" that crossed over a bunch of the various alternate universes I'd created for my favorite fandom, Back To The Future.
I hit 50,000 -- and didn't complete the story.
The next year, I bent the rules a little and picked up on my previous novel where I left off. Won again. Didn't complete again.
This was becoming a problem. In 2009, I decided to go in a different direction. I'd recently gained some new fandoms, so I decided to do a massive multiplayer crossover featuring them all. And, since I was into fairy tales at the time, I decided to make it a fairy tale AU.
Yes, you guessed it -- 50,000 words, and I still hadn't hit the end.
In 2010, I tried a slightly smaller effort, making a steampunk AU that focused mainly on my three favorite fandoms -- Back To The Future, American McGee's Alice, and Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. The curse of "50,000 nowhere near the end" not only held, but got worse -- "Secundus" ended up morphing into its own little universe. I just can't win with NaNoWriMo.
Nevertheless, I've persevered, and I've managed to finish both "When Worlds Collide" and "Secundus." And "The Tale" is nearing its end -- hopefully by the end of 2013, it will be finished. Below are the links to the various tales I've crafted. I hope you enjoy what's available.
When Worlds Collide: The worst villain a certain universe has ever known has escaped death and discovered how to transverse dimensions. This is only going to get worse before it gets better. BTTF, multi-verse crossover (2007-2008) COMPLETED!
The Tale: A boy who knows no fear. The godson of death. Little Red Riding Hood. A man with an enchanted watch. And Sleeping Beauty. All up against the demon Queen of Hearts. Yeah, this will go well. All fandoms and all fairy tales, welcome to "The Tale." BTTF/CB/AMA/others, AU (2009, 2012)
Secundus: Victor Van Dort expected to live a perfectly ordinary life in his home town of Burtonsville. But a chance encounter with a flying steam train will turn his entire world upside-down. Welcome to Secundus, Master Van Dort. BTTF/CB/AMA, AU (2010) COMPLETED -- and now with its own section!
